Wacana Putra helps to preserve greenery in UPM

SERDANG, May 2 – Faculty of Environmental Studies jointly organized with Office of Corporate Strategy and Communication (CoSComm), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)  ,  a Wacana Putra programme with the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTHHA), Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, aimed at exposing UPM personnel and the public to Green Technology.

Under Wacana Putra’s “Sustainable Development: Deliverology of Sustainability”,  Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini called on campus people to adopt and practise sustainable lifestyles.

“Public awareness is the key factor to influencing the success of green technology development. This effort requires a change in the mindset of the people.

"The involvement of corporate bodies in corporate social responsibility activities and contribution of funds will indirectly instil awareness towards togetherness in embracing this culture of appreciating green technology," he said.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris, meanwhile, said the implementation of green sustainability was one of the main agenda of UPM.

"Lots of UPM researches focus on preservation of green such as rainwater harvesting in residential colleges, the waste bank programme, Serdang Biomass Town Awareness Campaign and the Recycle@U programme.

"The star rating by the management centre responsible also takes into consideration green sustainability component as the scoring criteria in expenditure, reduction in electricity and water bills and paper consumption," she said.

She also said one of the university's efforts was to ensure that its campus in Serdang and Bintulu will always feature green sustainable environments.

"I hope that UPM personnel can embrace those good values to take care of the environment," she said.

At the ceremony, Dato 'Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang also launched the Sikal Elektrik Rakyat 1 Malaysia (SER1M), UPM, by handing over a SER1M bicycle to the Yang DIPertua of Student Representatives Council (MPP), Mohd Ameerul Ishak, who represented all UPM students.

Under SER1M programme, UPM received 200 units of electric bicycles from KeTHHA through Green Technology Corporation, aimed at promoting the technology among the youths.

He also presented prizes for a Recycling contest under faculties and residential colleges categories for the Putra Green Campus programme organized by MPP UPM Secretariat of Green Technology Development. – UPM.
